FIELD TESTING OF PROPELLANTS.

Abstract

Screening studies were continued on methods for field testing of the propellants N2H4/UDMH, N2O4/NO and gelled N2H4/Al. Specific attention was given to the following: (1) vapor pressure measurements of N2O4/NO, (2) colorimetric characterizations of N2O4/NO, (3) coulometric determination of N2H4/UDMH, (4) thin layer chromatography of N2H4/UDHM derivatives, (5) the determination of water in Al/N2H4 gel, (6) the characterization of Al/N2H4 gels by electrochemical conductivity correlations, and (7) colorimetric determinations for N2H4/Al gel. As a result of the work carried out those methods which show reasonable promise of field utility and merit further consideration on the basis of the screening studies are: (1) vapor pressure measurements of N2O4/NO, (2) reaction of N2O4/NO with oxygen, (3) the calcium hydride-water reaction to determine water in N2H4/UDMH and N2H4/Al gel, and (4) the coulometric titration of N2H4/UDMH.
