MEASUREMENT OF STRESS IN TWEEN DECK 'FEEDER' BULKHEADS ABOARD A GRAIN-CARRYING SHIP.

Abstract

This report describes the preparation and installation of an instrument package to measure the loading on temporary 'feeder' bin bulkheads installed on dry cargo ships when carrying bulk grain. The data obtained during one transatlantic voyage are presented. It is shown that the bulk grain produces loads approximating those generated by a liquid of equal density and fluctuation of loads as great as 25% may be expected during heavy rolling of the ship.
