INVESTIGATION OF CONTAMINATION TOLERANCE LEVEL FOR HYDRAULIC PUMPS.

Abstract

During the quarter covered by this report, the 50 hour tests of the hydraulic pumps were completed. The first test series constituted three 50 hour tests to establish the weight of a standard composition contaminant to allow satisfactory pump operation. The pumps completed tests at levels of approximately 1.5 mg/100 m1 followed by 3.5 mg/100 m1 but were on the verge of failure because of internal leakage as demonstrated in the third test. The second test series was carried out using a contaminant charge having the same composition by weight as in the first test series, but having controlled particle size ranges. Three 50 hour tests were carried out at a weight level of 3.5 mg/100m1 and at size ranges less than 3 microns, 3 to 5 microns, and 5 to 10 microns. In each of these size ranges, approximately 10 per cent by weight of the particles used fell into the next higher size range. The third test series was carried out to determine the effect of particle type on pump operation. The contamination level used was 3.5 mg/100 m1 and the size range was 5 to 10 microns. The exception was with the cotton linters where the count was held to a maximum of 200 fibers/100 m1 since 3.5 mg of fibers/100 m1 was felt to be unrealistic. No effect was noted on pump operation for the fibers or for the rouge. The iron filings also produced little effect on the pumps but in the fourth test the A.C. dust produced excessive leakage in less than 3 hours in two cases and in 15 hours in the third case.
