STUDY OF AIRBORNE MILLIMETER RADAR TECHNIQUES.

Abstract

A summary is presented of work previously reported on under the following principal tasks: Physical Characteristics of Obstacles; Advanced Sensor Techniques; Mathematical System Modeling for Computer Simulation; and Millimeter Radar Experiments. Research into clutter discrimination at 70 GHz by means of frequency agility is presented. Based on a previously developed model, the transmitted frequency is made to vary in a sinusoidal manner and the electric field reradiated from the model is calculated. The results indicate a marked dependence of the backscatter signal on the amount of frequency agility. Spectra are presented which indicate energy shift over the clutter band. The digital simulations of the intermediate frequency amplifier, simple horn antenna, and clutter generator are reviewed. A description of the 70 GHz, Norden-built, radar, as well as a summary of the methods of statistical analysis employed in discussing previously obtained radar data are presented.
