ADVANCED WIRE-WOUND TUNGSTEN NOZZLES.

Abstract

AFRPL is sponsoring a program which is directed toward the demonstration of the capabilities of UTC's wire-wound plasma-spray bonded tungsten nozzle inserts. Three nozzle inserts are to be designed, fabricated, and tested. The testing will be conducted with a highly corrosive, theoretical minimum 6,700 F solid propellant. Thermal and stress analyses were completed and a report entitled Nozzle Design Analysis, satisfying the reporting requirements of the referenced contract, was submitted. These analyses were conducted to provide a design basis for nozzles to be fabricated under phase I, task 2 of the program. During this quarter, wire spacing and tensioning requirements have been determined, using a full-scale mockup of the nozzle mandrel. Fabrication of spacing plates and turning fixtures has been completed. All materials to be purchased for the program have been obtained. Power feeding systems have been put into operation, and personnel are being trained in the plasma-spraying operations. A mandrel has been machined for the exit cone tapewrapping operation. The aft closure mold has been machined. The nozzle shells and retaining rings are being fabricated.
