NERVA COMPONENTS IRRADIATION PROGRAM. VOLUME 5: ASTR TESTS 4, 4A, AND 5,

Abstract

Several mechanical components proposed for use in the NERVA engine were subjected to radiation from Test Reactor. They consisted of bearings to be used in a turbine pump assembly (TPA). The bearings were installed in testers and three tests were run. Each test was scheduled for 60 minutes duration. These three tests are designated ASTR Tests 4, 4A, and 5. The bearings were dynamically operated at 24,000 rpm with liquid hydrogen flowing through the tester and the reactor power at 10 Mw. A brief summary of each test is given.
