THE PROPAGATION OF SHOCK WAVES IN NONLINEAR VISCOELASTIC MATERIALS.

Abstract

The possibility of a shock wave generated by impact on a long bar of a general nonlinear viscoelastic (simple) material is discussed. Characteristic relations are derived, as well as the equation governing the decay of the shock amplitude as the shock is propagated into a previously underformed bar. It is shown how these equations may be used to generate a numerical integration procedure. (Author)
