SUPERALLOY COATINGS FOR COMPONENTS FOR GAS TURBINE ENGINE APPLICATIONS.

Abstract

Structures and oxidation resistance of experimental and commercial aluminum-base coating systems were evaluated on several nickel-base and cobalt-base superalloys. Coating melting temperatures and the effect of substrate alloying elements on the coating were investigated and coating failure mechanisms were defined. A duplex coating system, Ta+Co-Al, was developed and optimized. The properties of the Ta+Co-Al system were evaluated and compared against similar properties of commercially coated superalloys. The effects of tantalum thickness and deposition techniques were also investigated. (Author)
