FIELD EXPEDIENTS FOR CANAL CROSSINGS.

Abstract

Means for expediting canal crossings of mechanized rifle (M-113) and armored cavalry (M-114) troops are presented. This is particularly applicable in the Mekong River Delta where muddy-bottomed, steep-banked, swift-current canals have caused loss of operational momentum and, occasionally, have completely terminated the operation. Several effective techniques of expediting canal crossings and vehicle recovery have been developed. The methods studied included the following: capstan-anchor, push bar, balk aluminum bridging, push method, employment of demolition, brush fill, towing, block and tackle (waterborne), block and tackle (landborne), log bearings, and S hook.
