DEVELOPMENT OF PLANE STRAIN FRACTURE TOUGHNESS FOR HANDBOOK PRESENTATION.

Abstract

The purpose of this program is to experimentally determine plane strain fracture toughness values for a variety of high strength-to-weight materials over a range of test temperatures. The ultimate objective is to develop the data in a form which would be useful for presentation in handbook form. During the current report period the primary emphasis was placed on procuring a number of heats of material, machining test specimens, and heat treating to the desired strength levels. Initial test results were obtained on 4140 steel at room temperature using precracked notch bend tests. (Author)
