AROMATIC POLYMERS FOR THERMALLY-STABLE FIBERS AND FILMS.

Abstract

Five pounds of PODZ-I/T fiber, prepared by the benzene sulfonic acid-catalyzed cyclodehydration of O-I-O-T fiber, have been produced with T/E/Mi - 6.7/6.243( yarn) and T/E/Mi -8.0/10/227 (fiber). The excellent chemical and thermal durability of this poly-1,3,4-oxadiazole fiber, previously reported, has been confirmed, as has the deficiencies of low U.V durability and flammability. Copoly(1,3,4-thiadiazole-hydrazide), copoly(p-phenylene-2,5-(1, 3,4-thiadiazole)-p-phenyl-hydrazide-m-phenylene-hydrazide), PTSDZTOIO, has been prepared and dry spun into fibers with T/E/Mi of 1.04/72/38. Thermal conversion to PODZ-PSDZ fiber gave maximum tensile properties of T/E/Mi -0.86/2.1/46. The TGA's for PTSDZTOIO and PODZ-PSDZ were found to be very similar to O-I and/or OIOT and PODZ-I and/or PODZ-I/T and the PODZ-PSDZ about of equal flammability to PODZ-I/T fiber. (Author)
