INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS OF WIND TUNNEL INVESTIGATIONS,
Abstract
The Report notes briefly some of the differences between aeronautical wind-tunnel testing and industrial applications, where the effect of atmospheric wind on the surrounding terrain is usually the point of interest; the need to determine the interaction between several buildings or objects, as distinct from the airflow round a single object, makes desirable a longer working section than is usually available in conventional wind tunnels. Test made at the University of Michigan on the evaluation of smoke stacks, with particular reference to their design and orientation, are described and results are shown of flow patterns, of the determination of minimum stack height and of the critical ratio of stackgas velocity to wind velocity for the smoke to plume to clear the surrounding terrain. Pictorial examples of wind-tunnel studies of smoke stacks and a short bibliography are included. (Author)
