Development of Elbow Telscope, FRE-7043.
Abstract
The T181 direct-fire telescope is designed for the T219 platoon antitank (PAT) 90-mm recoilless rifle, development of which was begun in July 1954 following preliminary studies of a multipurpose shoulder-fired antitank weapon combining the advantages of a rocket launcher and a recoilless rifle. Work started on the T181 telescope in the early part of 1956 in an effort to develop a lightweight, simple, and accurate sight to supersede the T169 telescope that was originally designed for the 57-mm recoilless rifles but which was serving as the interim sight for the developmental PAT weapon. The T181 is a 3-power, fixed-focus, lightweight telescope that can be quickly and accurately seated in its tubular mount, which is secured to the rear support bracket of the T219 rifle. A cylindrical aluminum-alloy body and an adapter, bolted together at their flanged ends, contain all of the optical components of the telescope. (Author)
