SCIENTISTS IN THE NAVAL RESERVE,
Abstract
A study is made of scientific manpower among officers in the U. S. Naval Reserve. The objective of the study, which was conducted in 1952, is to supply the Navy with information necessary for effective utilization of scientific personnel in the Naval Reserve. For purpose of this study, the minimum qualifications of a scientist are a Bachelor's degree and some technical or professional experience. A comprehensive questionnaire was distributed to approximately 15,000 reserve officers, or about five percent of the reserve officer population. These men composed a selected random sample of potential scientists in the reserve. The sample contained only line officers who had at least a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent and some experience in a professional or technical field. Staff corps officers and Waves were not included. Completed and usable questionnaires were returned by 9,075 or 59 percent of the officers in the sample. (Author)
