DEVELOPMENT OF TELESCOPE MOUNT, M114(T199).

Abstract

The M114 (T199) telescope mount, which is bolted to the combination gun mount of the M60 main battle tank, holds the rear of the objective tube of the M105C (T171) telescope. The front of the objective fits into a hole in the gun shield, where it is supported by a ring welded to the gun shield. The telescope is articulated so that its objective pivots vertically with the gun in elevation while the eyepiece is held practically stationary by a device attached to the roof of the turret. This arrangement enables the gunner to sight through the telescope and lay the weapon without having to raise and lower himself in the limited working space of the turret. The M114 is bolted to two pads welded to the recoil housing of the gun mount. Pins on the two pads fit into holes in the M114, preventing relative motion between the telescope mount and the gun tube. The rear of the telescope's objective is held in a yoke-type clamp, which can be moved vertically or horizontally by means of boresighting knobs. The knob for adjustments in azimuth is on the side of the mount, and the one for adjustments in elevation is on the bottom. Each knob has a scale graduated in increments of 0.1 mil, and numbered each mil from 1 to 5. The telescope is held securely in its boresighted position by locking levers. (Author)
