AROMATIC POLYMERS FOR THERMALLY-STABLE FIBERS AND FILMS

Abstract

Poly(2,2'(m-phenylene)-5,5'(6,6'-bibenzimidazole) has been prepared and dry spun in viscosities ranging from 0.65 to 0.94 (DMSO). Tensile prop erties were studied as a function of polymer viscosity. Thermal stability of these fibers has been evaluated. Polybenzimidazole polymers and random copolymers were prepared with varying percentages of isophthalate and terephthalate linkages. Thermal and tensile properties of these polymers and fibers made from them were compared with poly(2,2'(m-phenylene)-5,5'(6,6'bibenzimidazole). The copolymers were found to be essentially equivalent to the homopolymer in all respects. Preliminary process studies were carried out.(Author)
