OXIDE CATHODE AND PRIMARY GRID EMISSION STUDIES.

Abstract

Evidence in the form of oscillograms is presented to show that certain of the arcs occurring in some 715B tubes are initiated by the screen grid and after a delay of as much as several hundred microseconds transfers to the cathode and control grid. These oscillograms were taken when tripping the synchroscope with a newly developed triggering circuit described herein. The thermionic emission of gold-plated molybdenum contaminated by the material evaporated from an oxide cathode has been investigated. Once the material is contaminated it is impossible to restore the emission completely to its original value by heat treatment. An anomalous behavior has been found in that the work function and Richardson constant increase upon contamination. The thermionic emission properties of gold-plated molybdenum and carbonized nickel do not differ greatly. (Author)
