OXIDE CATHODE AND PRIMARY GRID EMISSION STUDIES.

Abstract

About 30% of all the arcs occurring in the 715B tubes are of a particular type called here the delayed type arc. Initially the screen grid arcs to the plate and after a time delay of often several hundred microseconds the arc seems to be transferred with the cathode and control grid acting as cathode to the arc. An explanation is offered for this unusual condition. The other 70% of the arcs are characterized by a breakdown in which the cathode and control grid lose electrons which are collected by the screen grid and plate. Parts have been ordered for a simple electron diffraction apparatus. If successful, this apparatus will permit analysis will permit of very thin films of the material evaporated from an oxide-coated cathode under various operating conditions. (Author)
