AN ELEMENTARY TREATMENT OF THE MOTION OF A SPINNING PROJECTILE ABOUT ITS CENTER OF GRAVITY

Abstract

A spin is imparted to most artillery projectiles to prevent their tumbling. It is of interest in designing projectiles and the rifling of cannon to know what spin is required to produce a stable motion of the projectile about its center of gravity. The object of this paper is to provide simply and clearly the theoretical basis for the estimation of the required spin and to describe analytically the motion of a yawing, spinning projectile.
