INVESTIGATION OF THE FREQUENCY RESPONSE CHARACTERISTIC OF THE CTE 49016 TELEPHONES,

Abstract

An investigation was made on the removal of the peak in the frequency characteristic of Navy Type CTE 49016 head telephones (Telephonics Type TH-37). The investigation was carried out by altering the frequency response characteristic so as to be nearly flat. A comparison was made of the unaltered telephones with the altered ones of the same type and with the Western Electric Type 711A telephones. The Type 711A telephone is flat to about 7500 cycles. Tests were also made on altered Navy Type CTE 49016 telephones with staggered characteristics; that is, with rounded peaks occurring at different frequencies below 3000 cycles. All of the altered phones had a pleasant tone, but gave a less satisfactory performance on the intelligibility test. The investigation indicates that the elimination of the peak in the Type CTE 49016 telephones is of little or no value unless the frequency band can be extended above its present 3000 cycle limit. The most desirable band is from 200 to 4000 cycles.
