PERFORMANCE STUDIES ON ANIMALS EXPOSED TO EXTERNAL RADIATION. I. SOME EFFECTS OF SUBLETHAL TOTAL BODY IRRADIATION UPON THE PERFORMANCE OF EXHAUSTIVE SWIMMING TESTS.
Abstract
The ability of rats to perform standardized exhaustive swimming tests was decreased greatly by total body irradiation with 600r of x-rays. Animals which survived nine weeks or longer after irradiation regained their initial performance ability. The stress of repeated physical performance caused a 50 percent mortality among irradiated swimmers while 100 percent of irradiated non-swimming animals survived. Some correlative alternations in body weight and test performance are analyzed. (Author)
