RESEARCH ON THE APPLICATION OF ELECTRICAL CURING TO HEAT RESISTANCE STRUCTURAL ADHESIVES.
Abstract
During this quarter, work was devoted to the continued development of fabrication techniques for honeycomb sandwich structures. Several materials were evaluated as adhesive carriers and electrical insulators. A 100 hours aging study was performed to select the best material for electrical insulation. Two adhesive carrier materials have proven successful for elimination of electrical shorting in honeycomb panels. A polyimide film, and an asbestos paper - polyimide prepreg, were evaluated for their potential to prevent electrical shorting problems. Both materials alleviated this problem and both resulted in good adhesive bonds. A 100 hours aging study was conducted to select the best electrical insulation material for use in honeycomb panels. Stainless steel lap shear panels were fabricated with 3-layer composites involving asbestos-carbon and polyimide film-carbon and tested for lap shear tensile strength versus temperature before and after aging. On the basis of strength results, the asbestos prepreg was selected as the most promising and is currently in use for the fabrication of honeycomb panels.
