Study of Stabilizing Agents for New High Explosives.

Abstract

A study has been made of the effect of prolonged heating in the 100 C. Vacuum Stability Test on the stability (1) of Pentolite and Tetrytol alone, (2) of (1) with one percent diphenylamine and carbazole, and (3) of Tetrytol with one percent dicyandiamide. It has been found that diphenylamine and carbazole exert a marked stabilizing action on Pentolite. Because of the lower price of diphenylamine, it is recommended that it be considered for adoption as a stabilizer for Pentolite rather than carbazole, unless the lack of availability of diphenylamine would warrant the use of the more expensive carbazole. None of the agents examined stabilized Tetrytol, and no stabilizer is known at present for this explosive. The suggestion is made that investigation be continued further in order to find a suitable stabilizing agent for Tetrytol.
