Service Tests of Experimental High-Speed Towing Targets Conducted off the Virginia Capes May 20 to 27, 1949,

Abstract

In the interest of developing improved planing-type towing targets for gunnery practice, the Bureau of Ships in February 1947 requested the David Taylor Model Basin to conduct tests on models of three new designs of 60-foot target sleds prepared by the Bureau, and on a modification of the existing G-60 target sled. In addition to these models a fifth design was developed by the author, a member of the staff of the Taylor Model Basin. Subsequently additional modifications were made to the G-60 model, and tested in the Model Basin. As a result of these tests the Bureau decided to build and test two all steel targets, one from the TMB design, identified as the X-4, and one from a Bureau modification of the TMB design, identified as the X-3. In addition one of the existing G-60 targets was modified in accordance with recommendations based on the TMB model tests. This target is referred to in this report as the modified G-60 Target. The purpose of the tests was to evaluate the relative merits of the targets under actual service conditions.
