On the Problem of Estimating the Number of Schools of Fish.

Abstract

The present study was undertaken in connection with the recent rapid decline in the annual catch of California sardines. This decline was observed in spite of a reported steady increase in fishing effort, and created considerable anxiety. Also it caused efforts to develop methods of using such data as are or may be available from fishing crews to obtain reasonably accurate estimates of the population of sardines in California waters. Since sardines travel and are caught in schools, the problem of estimating the whole population splits into two parts: the problem of the number of schools in a fishing ground and the problem of the number od sardines in a school. The present paper deals only with the first of these problems and strives to use the minimum of records which could reasonably be expected from commercial fishermen.
