Test Firing of 3-in./70 Gun Barrels. Comparison Tests of 3-in. British Bore Measuring Gauge versus U.S. Fleet Star Gauge Mk. 8 Mod. 1.
Abstract
As a result of the comparative measurements the following conclusions were made. The 3-in. British Bore Measuring Gauge readings compare favorably with the U.S. Fleet Star Gauge Mk. 8 Mod. 1 when used in 3-in./70 caliber guns. However, the 3-in. British Gauge requires careful handling when removing from the gun, to bring the vernier scale into view of the operator, thus increasing the possibility of error after the measurement is taken. In guns which have the origin of the bore and rifling at approximately the same point, the 3-in. British Gauge will require careful handling to accurately measure the origin of the bore, due to the difficulty in holding the gauge plate steady while the measurement is taken.
