Interior Ballistic Studies. Initial Rapid Fire Tests of Picrite Type Cool Powder in a 3 in./50 Caliber Gun Mark 22 Mod 4.

Abstract

This report covers initial rapid-fire tests (1000 rounds) of picrite type cool propellant in a standard Mark 22 Mod 4 3 in./50 caliber gun barrel. The barrel was fired with schedules of seven 25 round bursts with 20 second intervals between bursts. Projectile velocities, range dispersion, bore gauging and inspection data, and other ballistic information were obtained. The objective of this test was to determine the wear-rate of a standard 3 in./50 caliber gun when fired with the above schedules using a picrite type cool powder.
