Fragmentation Testing of Warheads for Guided Missiles. Fragmentation Test of Rod Expelling Warheads Naval Ordnance Laboratory Trial Models 112.

Abstract

This test was conducted to determine the fragmentation characteristics of Composition C-3 loaded rod expelling warheads Naval Ordnance Laboratory Model 112, which were constructed from 1/2 in. boiler plate, hot grooved formed into half cylinders, and welded into cylinders 4.5 in. diameter, 12 in. long, with a major wall thickness of 7/16 in. Although the warheads broke along the grooves, as was intended, the rods thus produced broke transversely. The fragments of rods varied from 1/2 in. to 6 in. in length, and had an average median velocity of 4830 f/s. (Author)
