Interior Ballistic Studies. Rapid-Fire Tests of Picrite Type Cool Powder in a 3 in./50 Caliber Gun Mark 22 Mod. 4.

Abstract

This report covers rapid-fire tests (2000 rounds) of a picrite type cool propellant in a standard 3 in./50 caliber Mark 22 Mod. 4 gun barrel. The barrel was fired with schedules of seven 25 round bursts allowing 20 seconds to elapse between bursts. Projectile velocities, VT-fuze performance, range dispersion, and other ballistic data as well as bore gauging and inspection information were obtained. The object of this test was to determine the wear rate of a standard 3 in./50 caliber Mk 22 Mod. 4 gun barrel when fired with a picrite type cool powder under rapid-fire conditions.
