Test Firing of 3-in./70 Caliber Gun Barrels. Rapid-Fire Tests of 3-in./ 70 Caliber Barrel Type C Mod 3 Serial No. 24479-L

Abstract

The tests reported herein were conducted for the following purposes: (1) to fire the subject barrel to end of life; (2) to obtain information relative to the wear (gun life) characteristics of this type barrel under rapid- fire conditions; (3) to obtain information relative to the cooling characteristics of this type barrel under rapid-fire conditions; (4) to obtain information relative to cook-off temperatures following rapid-fire bursts; and (5) to determine the effects of using ceresin wax or petrolatum grease as a coating on cartridge cases to facilitate case extraction and ejection.
