Fragmentation of Projectiles and Warheads. Static Fragmentation of 8-in./55 FCL (VT) Projectiles Mk 25 Mod 1 with Experimental VT Fuzes.

Abstract

This test was conducted to determine the fragment space distribution and fragment velocities of 8-in./55 H.C. Projectiles Mk 25 Mod 1, Explosive D loaded and assembled with VT fuzes. Explosive D loaded 8-in. H.C. Projectiles Mk 25 Mod 1 assembled with either VT or point detonating nose fuzes will produce an average median beam spray fragment velocity in the order of 2100-feet per second. The number of effective fragments per total polar zone of the projectiles assembled with VT fuzes was determined. The greatest number of fragments were recorded in polar zone 90 - 95 deg.
