Wire Reinforced Grain Delamination Evaluation.

Abstract

This report documents the effort expended to define the critical conditions contributing to thick web wire reinforced grain (WRG) delamination, establish a solution, and verify by demonstration in high web fraction grains. A failure analysis of an existing delaminated WRG was conducted; and based on the resulting data, two thick web grains were fabricated. The first reinforced grain was made with conventional Butarez-based propellant and successfully survived three thermal cycles. The second grain, made with a new propellant formulation (ambient cure), delaminated on exposure to -65F in the second cycle.
