Development and Demonstration of an Advanced Attitude Control System.

Abstract

This document presents the work accomplished in the analysis, design and testing of an Advanced Attitude Control System (AACS) considered for use in a maneuvering space vehicle using cryogenic propellants for the main propulsion system. The AACS extracts liquids from the vehicle main tanks and converts the liquids to gases which are stored for use as thrustor propellants. The stored gases also motor the AACS pumps and are used for combustion in a heat regenerator to convert the liquids to gases. Several modified systems for propellant acquisition and conversion were analyzed. A system was assembled and feasibility demonstrated at the pumping subsystem and total system levels. Interfacing of the AACS with a maneuvering space vehicle was studied. Preliminary flight type designs were prepared for certain critical components and integrated propellant feed system designs were established. (Author)
