Lessons Learned, Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division

Abstract

During the reporting period units conducted offensive operations in the Mekong Delta provinces. There were four major operations during this period. As in the last reporting period, the enemy continued his resupply and reorganization missions with emphasis on recruiting and winning the support of the local population in contested areas. In addition to attempting to undermine GVN Pacification efforts, he further intensified his efforts to retain control of those areas under his domination. The 9th Infantry Division continued operations designed to destroy the enemy, to deny him the opportunity to reorganize and redistribute his forces and resources, and to impede his efforts to launch offensive operations against GVN forces and populated areas within its TAOI. The enemy's offensive activity was characterized by harassment of outposts, attacks by fire, and extensive use of mines and booby traps.
