High Energy Plasticizers.

Abstract

A total of 55.0 pounds of the energetic plasticizer P722, 2,3-bis(difluoramino) propyl 2,2-dinitropropyl carbonate, has been synthesized. Of this, 50.7 pounds exceed 99.0% purity and have excellent thermal stability, showing no detectable gas evolution in 52 days at 90C. Most of the P722 scale-up production problems have been solved but the purification of the intermediate ADNPOC, allyl 2,2-dinitropropyl carbonate, involves a slow distillation step. Shipping approval for a 35% solution of P722 in ethylene dichloride classifies it as a flammable liquid. A total of 18 pounds of the energetic plasticizer P731, 4,4,4-trinitrobutyl cyanoacetate has been synthesized. It has good stability as shown by gas generation of 0.7 ml/g/100 hours during 192 hours, at 90 C. A simple new thermal stability test has been developed which can detect gas evolution with a precision of 0.02 ml/g.
