New High-Energy Oxygen Oxidizers.

Abstract

Work is described toward the synthesis of TENDE, 1,2-dicyanotetranitroethane, a potentially new, high-energy, solid oxidizer. Two approaches to the synthesis of TENDE were explored: the cyanation of the salts of tetranitroethane and the nitration of the salts of 2,3-dinitrosuccinonitrile. Neither of the routes was successful in yielding an isolable solid that could be proved to be either TENDE itself or a precursor. The cyanation of the salts of tetranitroethane was attempted employing tetracyanomethane, cyanogen chloride, and trinitroacetonitrile as cyanating agents. The synthesis of cyanogen fluorosulfate, a potentially new cyanating agent, was attempted. Of the methods tried, the cyanation with tetracyanomethane in the presence of cesium fluoride was considered the most promising. The nitration of the salts of 2,3-dinitrosuccinonitrile was examined with the following agents: nitric acid, nitryl chloride, nitryl fluoride, tetranitromethane, and nitronium tetrafluoroborate and hexafluoroaresenate. Reaction with nitrosyl tetrafluoroborate to form the pseudonitrole was also attempted. None of the methods yielded stable nitro compounds. (Author)
