Synthesis of Stable New Interhalogen Oxidizers.

Abstract

The study of the ClF5/SbF5/F2 system was continued in an effort to synthesize ClF6SbF6. Infrared spectroscopic data on the products of reactions in Monel reactors had been interpreted as showing the probable synthesis of ClF6(+). However, subsequent reactions in aluminum reactors established that the compound was not formed unless either copper or nickel was present. The reaction was not catalyzed by a small amount of nickel. Thus, while the possibility that the material was ClF6SbF6 cannot be completely eliminated, it now seems likely that the product was a complex metal salt.
