Compact High Resolution Intensifier System.

Abstract

This report describes a program of research designed to establish the feasibility of constructing a compact high resolution image intensifier. The image intensifier was designed using a high resolution microchannel plate amplifier, with close tolerance proximity focusing from the photocathode to the phosphor screen. The main cause of loss of image resolution in the tube was established and ways to optimize the resolution were found. Fabrication of high-tolerance indium seals required new techniques to be established, including maintenance of tolerance by using spacers. Results of tube fabrication and recommendations for further action are also given. (Author)
