An Improved Method of Manufacture of a Ballistic Modifier for Smokeless Rocket Propellants

Abstract

Several improved processes for the preparation of a ballistic modifier derived in this laboratory under the name lead stannate-TDI(tolylene diisocyanate) reduced (LSTR) have been developed. Presented are the parameters of time, temperature, and concentration of reactants, the X-ray diffraction patterns of several modifiers, and the effects of catalysis on the combustion of an experimental nitramine plastisol formulation. Also included in the report is a comparison of the burning rate characteristics of crosslinked and uncrosslinked compositions containing various lead-based modifiers.
