Index of Performance for FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) Imaging Devices

Abstract

A certain combination of the FLIR performance parameters of resolution, sensitivity, field of view and frame rate is defined as the 'index of performance' and is related by a tradeoff equation to FLIR construction parameters such as diameter of the collecting optics and the number of infrared detectors. Graphs illustrating the use of the equation for analyzing the performance of FLIR equipments and exploring design tradeoffs are given. The indices of performance of past and present FLIR devices are used to trace the progress of FLIR development and to extrapolate into the future.
