Statistical Analysis of Ocean Noise

Abstract

A systematic analysis of low frequency ambient noise from a single element of a bottom and suspended array near Barbados was made. The noise statistics are different for bottom and suspended hydrophones as well as for different frequencies on the same hydrophone. For large bandwidth time products (BT) the noise distribution is skewed toward the higher noise levels; but for small BT the noise distribution is normal. Decorrelation times for large BT range from 1/2 to 5 hours.
