Protection of the Crew of Armoured Fighting Vehicles

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to develop a rationale of the relationships between NBC protection and combat efficiency. This will take the following FORM: (1) an analysis of factors contributing to the combat efficiency of the crew members of AFV's, (2) identification of those factors affected by NBC protection, (3) determination of the principal roles of three types of AFV, these being main battle tank (MBT) and two types of mechanised infantry combat vehicle (MICV), viz, reconnaissance vehicle (RV) and armoured personnel carrier (APC). The APC will be represented by the FV432 both in the 'straight' APC role, and also with a turret mounted weapon. The importance of factors sensitive to NBC protection with respect to these principal roles will be assessed.
