A Comparison of the Skin Irritancy and Skin Sensitisation Potentials of the Agents CS and CR in Animals

Abstract

Using the term 'Chemical Irritant' to mean a substance capable of causing on superficial contact a non-allergic inflammation of the skin, and 'Skin Sensitiser' to mean a substance capable of inducing on superficial contact a state of allergic sensitivity to itself, then: (1) CS is a chemical irritant in the rabbit; in the guinea pig it is both a chemical irritant and a skin sensitiser; (2) CR is not a chemical irritant in the rabbit; in the guinea pig it is neither a chemical irritant nor a sensitiser. The histopathology of the various skin effects is described.
