THE DISTRIBUTION OF GASES IN THE PROTOPLANETARY NEBULA.

Abstract

It is demonstrated that the distribution of elements in the solar system may be connected with solar magnetic fields. Relative diffusion of neutral particles and ions in a magnetic field (ambipolar diffusion) separates elements of different ionization potential. A simple model of the origin of the solar system which takes account of ambipolar diffusion successfully predicts relative terrestrial abundances of the noble gases Ne, A, Kr, and Xe. (Author)
