THE DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF TUNGSTEN-BASE ALLOYS.

Abstract

Tungsten-base alloys of the following nominal compositions were prepared by the vacuum-arccasting process: (1) W + 0.1% Zr + 0.01% C, (2) W + 0.25% Hf + 0.02% C, (3) W + 0.5% Zr + 0.002% C, and (4) W + 0.5% Hf + 0.04% C. One blank from each ingot was subjected to the extrusion process at the Air Force ASD extrusion facility. Wrought bar stock was obtained from ingots containing 0.5% Zr and 0.5% Hf, while blanks prepared from the other two heats stalled the extrusion press. The recrystallization behavior of the wrought bar stock is now being studied, and preparation of tensile test specimens from the successfully extruded bars is in progress. (Author)
