INVESTIGATION OF PRACTICAL TECHNIQUES FOR COATING REFRACTORY METALS.

Abstract

Studies are being continued to develop practical techniques for applying protective coatings to refractory metal alloys. The D-14 alloy (Cb-5Zr) currently being used as the substrate will be replaced early in the program with D-43 (Cb-10W1Zr). Initial experiments have been carried out to establish the feasibility of fused salt bath deposition as a continuous process. Results are promising. Experimental work underway on the fluidized bed process has been chiefly concerned with the evaluation of the fluidizing characteristics of various silicon-alumina mixtures. The furnace and its controls for the 8-in. dia fluidized bed have been received and are being installed. Electrokinetic and rheological studies of particles are being continued to obtain basic data for use in the design of slurry process systems. Current efforts are the investigation of water stabilizers and bisque strengtheners. (Author)
