ON SAMPLE SIZE DETERMINATION.

Abstract

A frequent request made prior to sampling involves the determination of the appropriate sample size necessary to estimate population characteristics (for example, the arithmetic mean) within a specified accuracy. Although the problem can be simply stated, the solution usually requires more a priori knowledge than is available. This informal memo suggests two approaches which could be used in estimating the mean value, mu, in a population containing N observations. The necessary assumptions are clearly stated. (Author)
