WICK BURNER FOR THERMIONIC GENERATORS.

Abstract

A basic burner model with a simulated flat diode of 2.86 sq cm area was designed, fabricated and tested. The design incorporates a non-pressurized, wick type gasoline vaporization system, and a heat exchanger for pre-heating the secondary combustion air by means of the hot exhaust gases. A number of different combustion chamber designs were tested to determine the optimum configuration. Difficulties encountered in measuring the diode heat flux led to the design and construction of an improved simulated flat diode. Tests performed on the improved burner model indicated a simulated emitter surface temperature of 1415 C at a heat flux of 51 watts/sq cm. (Author)
