EQUATION OF STATE FOR SOLID BODIES,

Abstract

Proceeding from the general concepts of the quantum theory of solid bodies, approximation expressions are obtained for the free energy of basic types of crystalline solid bodies (ions, valent and molecular crystals, metals). These expressions make it possible to obtain the equation of state as well as the compressibility and coefficient of thermal expansion as a function of pressure and temperature by the usual method. Constants entering into the formulas may be determined on the basis of experiments carried out at low pressure. The equations obtained are valid up to pressures at which some phase change takes place. Curves are given for several types of solid bodies (NaCl, MgO, Fe3O4, Mg2SiO4, Si, Ge, Fe). (Author)
