ISOLATION EFFECTS WHEN PAIRED-ASSOCIATES ARE PRESENTED SERIALLY.

Abstract

The experiment studied the effect of isolating one or both terms of a pair on learning the pair. The pairs were presented in the same order on each trial, the pair with the isolated term(s) appearing near the middle of the list. Isolation led to faster learning of the pair, but did not affect the rate of learning the entire list. It is proposed that one effect of isolation is a change in the sequence in which S attacks the items of a list, the isolated item being attacked sooner than if it were not isolated.
